The Digital Battery Passport: bureaucracy disguised as transparency
The Digital Battery Passport sounds like a step toward sustainability. In reality it is on track to become another bureaucratic document that gives buyers a feeling of safety with no technical substance behind it.
The entire system is built on parameters like SOH, which, as shown above, is just remaining capacity. A battery at 90% SOH can fail tomorrow. A battery at 70% SOH can drive hundreds of thousands of kilometers. We analyzed hundreds of battery systems from different manufacturers and found no reliable correlation between SOH and actual failure probability. The critical failure drivers are moisture, corrosion, cell internal resistance, thermal stress, cell quality, pack architecture and future repairability. The Battery Passport shows the buyer none of them.
A used EV buyer does not want to know the CO2 footprint of a battery produced ten years ago. The buyer wants to know one thing:
“How long, and to how many kilometers, will this battery remain technically flawless and economically repairable?”

Worth noting that your two sources disagree with each other: the video spends its last third taking EV Clinic apart and promises a second one just about them. Where they do agree is the part that matters - what is sold as "SoH" is a capacity estimate at one moment, not a health assessment.
That is not theoretical here. This week an e-Golf owner's app showed a 151 mV cell delta and a critical-cell warning; a VCDS scan taken the same morning read all 88 cells between 4.033 and 4.039 V - a 6 mV spread, a healthy pack. VW BMSes hand out cell voltages one at a time, so a sweep of 88-108 cells takes 30-70 seconds, and while charging the voltages move during that sweep - we were comparing readings from different moments and reporting the drift as imbalance. The BMS publishes an honest single-instant min/max pair and we were letting the slow sweep overwrite it. Fixed across the whole VW group now. A one-shot certificate on that car would have condemned a good battery.
The video's practical conclusion - own adapter, keep a diary of your own car - is what the Battery history card on the Battery tab does, and you already have it in the beta: a per-VIN ledger, SoH and usable kWh plotted by date or by odometer, lifetime throughput and equivalent full cycles, and a chip telling you whether the figure came from the BMS, was derived, or was restored from cache. Complete Battery Test results land on the same graph as measured points.
On EOLHC, the diagnosis is right - imbalance trend, temperature spread between modules and cell chemistry predict failure far better than a capacity number does. But some of the inputs (AC internal resistance per cell, humidity) need the pack opened, so no OBD app can produce them honestly, and repairability is a property of the repair market rather than of your battery. So we will not be shipping a score of our own. The trend part we can do, and that is where the work goes.
